BAND PROGRAMS
“Communities depend upon a diversity of talent.” ― Sir Ken Robinson
The Oakton High School Marching Band, also known as the Marching Cougars, is led by 3 drum majors, section leaders, and a student band council. The Marching Band focuses on musical performance while marching challenging drills together with a moving drumline, pit percussion, color guard and sometimes, props. The Marching Cougar musicians get a head start on building community at summer practices and camp during the weeks leading up to the first day of school.
Oakton High School has three concert bands that practice and perform throughout the school year: Symphonic, Concert 1 and Concert 2. Oakton High School Band is a 25-year State of Virginia Honor Band.
Oakton High has two jazz band classes that begin meeting in November, when marching band season ends. Students are assigned to either Jazz A or Jazz B by audition. Each class is held twice a week immediately after school. Students receive a course credit and a grade for participating.
In the fall, the Color Guard is an integral part of the marching band performances. They use flags, rifles, and sabres with dance to visualize the music played by the Marching Cougars. Separately, Winter Guard is an indoor activity during the following season where participants compete against other guard teams.
We are the music makers,
and we are the dreamers of dreams.
