Band Awards

How to Achieve a Band Award

Awards System

To recognize the efforts of our student musicians and to encourage service to our community, the Oakton High School Bands use a point system for a sequence of awards. Points are awarded for verified musical activities in and outside of the school while a member of the Oakton High School Bands and are cumulative from year to year.

Students use their accrued points to earn band awards. Once these points are used for an award, they are deducted from the total. Unused points carry over from one year to the next. Students may earn more than one award in one year if they accrue enough points.

Each award is worth 10 points. The sequence of awards is as follows:

  1. Letter
  2. Pin
  3. Numbers (Graduation year)
  4. Medallion

Community Service Component

In order for students to receive a band award, they must complete the Community Service Requirements. A Community Service Verification Sheet must be submitted with the Band Award Points Sheet by May 1.

Student Responsibility

It is the responsibility of the student to submit all required paperwork, Band Award Points Sheet and Community Service Verification Sheet, by the established deadline of May 1. Failure to do so, regardless of the number of points accrued, will preclude the student from receiving an award at the band banquet. All community service must be completed and supporting material submitted by this date. This is the responsibility of the student, not the parents or directors.
