Competitions and Football Games

Competitions and Football Games

After the preparation with August Band Camp and Orkney Camp in the summer, the Marching Band is ready for showtime in Fall. The Marching Band plays during the half-time shows and as the pep band in select football games and participates in area competitions—all these accumulate to the VBODA State Marching Assessment (States) in early November.

Football Games

The Oakton High School Marching Cougars proudly support our Varsity Football Team at all home and select away games. We are the Pep Band at all games and perform our Marching Band field show at halftime during home games.

We need parents to both chaperone and support the set up and take down of the front pit section and the show props. To volunteer, please contact the Head Chaperone or see the signup sheet. You will get to see the show up close, spend time with the students, meet other parents and have fun!

For Marching Students:

When students report for a marching band performance they should report in their show shirts, show hat and khaki-colored shorts, usually until the weather turns cold.  Show shirts are not to be worn unless it is during a football game, tag day or on a performance day until the season is over.  This is helpful because it makes a statement that we are Oakton Band, and it helps the chaperones to recognize the Band members when they are in a crowd.

When marching uniforms are worn, LONG black socks and Dinkles are mandatory.  One pair of gloves will be issued. There is to be no visible jewelry; no earrings, rings, bracelets or watches.  Long hair must be put up or have a hair net so it can easily be tucked into their marching hat.

If you have any questions please contact uniforms@oaktonbands.org.

Marching Competitions

The Marching Cougars participate in weekly competitions to prepare for the VBODA State Marching Assessment (States). The competitions are always on Saturdays in the months of September and October and students should not plan any activities on competition days as departure and performance times vary from week to week. The schedule is posted at the beginning of each week.

We need volunteers to ride the buses with the students, help with equipment staging, and chaperone the band. To volunteer, please contact the Head Chaperone or see the signup sheet.

Band Uniforms

Students are to report for a marching band performance in their show shirts and shorts or pants.  Show shirts not to be worn unless it is during a football game or on a performance day until the season is over.

Please help your students come to performances in the proper attire and with all their uniform parts and pieces. If you have any questions please send an email to uniforms@oaktonbands.org.

Getting Ready for Competitions

  • Make sure student has had a good night’s sleep
  • Check e-mail and website for any updates to the uniform or the day’s schedule
  • Make sure the student has all items needed - all uniform parts/instruments not already at school (black marching shoes, black socks-above ankle, instrument)
  • Send money for lunch and/or dinner - make sure money is not packed away but is with the student
  • Remind students to wear “changeable” clothing which they will wear under their uniforms - (black t-shirt (UnderArmour works well because it is fitted) shorts not too long or baggy
  • Make sure student arrives in the band room at the assigned time - at this time the students will hear about the day’s events, schedule and begin rehearsal
    Parent Volunteers for Marching Competitions
  • Help is always needed to chaperone these trips and help with the pit crew. If you want to help, please see the volunteer page or contact the head chaperone. Your participation is vital to the success of the Marching Cougars!
  • Volunteers generally arrive one hour before we expect the buses to arrive - you will be notified the week of the competition as to your arrival time. Learn more about chaperone and pit duties

Spectators

  • Parents are encouraged to attend these performances and cheer on the band - your students need your support! Check the website or e-mails for competition time.
  • Travel on your own and arrive earlier than our competition time because once a high school performance begins you will not be allowed to enter the stands.
  • Expect gate prices, program and concession sales - support the high schools hosting the competitions!
  • Cheer loudly for Oakton - sit together if possible for a combined show of force - wear spiritwear!

After the Competition

Parents waiting to pick up students please note: All students are required to stay until equipment is unloaded and returned to its proper location and the band room is clean and set up for class. ALL drumline students are to assist the return of the pit equipment to the upper seatrain. These activities take time. Offers of help from extra parents are always welcome!
